C-R-A-F-T: The Simple Prompt Framework
May 7, 2025
Most people use Generative AI like a basic search engine, asking simple questions and accepting mediocre, generic answers. If you’re not getting the precise, high-quality output you need for professional work, the problem isn't the AI—it's your prompt.
To move from basic commands to strategic AI collaboration, you need a framework. We recommend C-R-A-F-T, the structured methodology that turns your interaction into an effective dialogue:
Context: Tell the AI why it is performing the task (e.g., "I'm writing an internal memo for the CEO").
Role: Define the persona the AI should adopt ("Act as a Senior Financial Analyst").
Audience: Specify who is reading the output (e.g., "The language should be accessible to a non-technical marketing team").
Format: Dictate the structure of the output (e.g., "Respond in a 5-point bulleted list, using markdown").
Task: The specific action you require.
Example:
Instead of asking, "Write a social media post about our new course," you would use C-R-A-F-T to request: "You are a witty, enthusiastic Social Media Strategist (Role), writing for a B2B audience on LinkedIn (Audience). Based on the provided product description (Context), write three distinct options for a post (Task) in a professional, engaging tone (Format)." The quality difference is undeniable. Master this essential skill by enrolling in our Mastering AI Prompts course.
